El 25 de julio de 1939, primero en los vagones de mercancías del tren del Irati hasta Lumbier y posteriormente en camiones, cientos de presos fueron conducidos desde Pamplona hasta el pueblo de Roncal, en el valle del mismo nombre. Los lugareños se preguntaban qué clase de ganado transportarían, hacinado como cerdos; o si se trataría de segadores, saltimbanquis o gitanos. Dijeron que aquel Batallón Disciplinario de Trabajadores n.º 127 venía a realizar las labores de acondicionamiento de la frontera pirenaica, y que trabajarían en la carretera que debía unir los valles de Salazar y Roncal, e igualmente otros tantos obreros deberían hacerlo en las que conectarían Lesaca con Oyarzun, o Eugui con Irurita. Son palabras del NO-DO: «Con el Trabajo, el Pan y la Justicia de la Patria, poco a poco los prisioneros van reconstruyendo lo que ellos mismos antes deshicieron con dinamita». Harapientos, arrastrando los pies cansados, como autómatas, los presos se movían de sol a sol al ritmo marcado por las cornetas: para formar, para los recuentos interminables y, sobre todo, para, a golpe de pala, cesto y carretilla, ensanchar la caja de la carretera hasta caer rendidos.
